The White Seal, Chuck Jones, 1973

Sometimes when I'm looking for cartoons for y'all, I find something that makes me explode with nostalgia. I remember seeing this when I was a kid, and LOVING it, but hadn't even thought of it for years.

Chuck Jones' adaptation of a Rudyard Kipling story of a special white seal and his quest for a place he can be safe.

ETA: Chuck Jones fans should definitely check out Chuck Redux.

  1. I never saw this as a kid, although I did see his Mowgli's Brothers and Rikki Tikki Tavi, which I thought the best Kipling adaptations until I saw the Russian Mowgli stuff.

  2. Yeah, it seemed like Mowgli's Brothers and Riki Tiki Tavi were shown far more often than The White Seal. I remember the former two being on TV at least once a year, but The White Seal was a rare treat.

I don't think I've seen the Russian Mowgli films. I'll have to look those up.

  3. I work for the Chuck Jones family and just wanted to say thanks for the nice comments about "The White Seal" and the other animated films Chuck directed based on stories by Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book".

  4. I'm so happy you stopped by! Chuck Jones is a hero of mine. His work not only pervaded my childhood, but, uh, maybe helped extend it to, er, right now. I think he would have liked that.

I am glad I got to see The White Seal all these years later. The character animation is fantastic. There are moments that thrilled me as a child that I had forgotten, and it was fun to see them again as an adult animation fan - to both appreciate the artistry and to be swept away by the story.
